Review of Alfie (2004) by Winnie L — 30 Mar 2010
** (out of four).
Jude Law is, undoubtedly, well cast in this remake of the classic 1966 film that was a sensation at the time of its release and helped make Michael Caine a star. The stylish editing and tone harkens back to the original. That is part of the problem with this version. It has no identity of its own. Hopefully most people have seen both the original and this remake. In comparison, the older one is far better and it fits well in its time. It is a wonderful piece of 1960's culture. This new version will likely feel more dated since it doesn't really represent any time.
Instead of London, this is one is set in New York City. Jude Law is Alfie, a limosine driver who goes through women at a ferocious rate. He uses them and then moves on. But his deeds are beginning to catch up with him and he starts questioning the choices he's made.
In 1966 "Alfie" was a good representation of the new filmmaking that was emerging in that decade. Today it is simply just another attempt to recapture the past.
