Sentimentally uplifting without ever trying to instigate an authentic conflict, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is more thoughtful and less sophomoric than the trailer might have you anticipating, but it does occasionally suffer from its trite message and predictable moments of slapstick gags.
