Review of Alexander (2004) by Richard H — 01 Nov 2009
Really not as bad as some reviews made it out to be, but hardly the greatest film either. I found out that several odd moments which I'd written off as Hollywood cheese were actually part of the legend of Alexander, and it was a surprisingly faithful film.
That said, it is long, drags in places, the casting of Jolie as Farrell's mother seems silly, and all the homo-erotic tension is implicit, not explicit, while the battle scenes are epic. If ever a film captured Hollywood's attitude that it's fine to show two men killing each other, but not kissing each other, this is it.
But I did love the casting of Farrell's kid brother (who is the spitting image of Colin) to play the young Alexander.
