Review of Alexander (2004) by Esraa B — 11 Apr 2011
"Fortune favours the bold.".
~ VIRGIL -- The Aeneid. "The world is yours, Alexander. Take it.".
A bold and visionary look at the trials and tribulations of the life of Alexander The Great, a visually dazzling and spectacularly splendid film that's easy on the eyes, but is not without its downfalls. The story of one of the greatest conquerors that the world has ever known, a story that's shrouded in myth and legend comes to life with searing audacity in this intense film. The battle sequences are chaotic, bloody, intense, but ultimately confusing. It's an intense character study about one mans personal demons and how they ultimately led to his impending demise. Overall, it was a good film packed with plenty imagination, epic battle sequences, and Stone's trademark visionary Directorial eye. Its flaws are in the confusing storytelling and overlapping plotlines, which are explained in a confusing voice-over narrative. Besides that the film is wonderful, it's fun to watch, optically pleasing, dark and violent, completely epic, and it's another classic by Oliver Stone in my opinion, he can't miss.
Completely packed with star power, Alexander is overloaded with acting talent. Colin Farrell was good In his performance as Alexander. It's one of the better performances I've seen from him. Angelina Jolie was sexy as hell in her role, and the same for Rosario Dawson. Val Kilmer turned in a brilliantly dark performance and nailed it. Anthony Hopkins was excellent as well.
