Review of Alexander (2004) by Deathcore O — 02 Jul 2011
This film has soooooooooooooooooooo much potential, but it seemed to go everywhere. I'm not really sure how I could rate this, for all its greatness, it felt to have more flaws.
I for one really enjoyed the performances, but there was a mixture of accents (mostly Irish) that would confuse the average viewer of what genre of acting the actors were going for and what race each character was representing.
There was also a really strange sense of romance in this film that was just as confusing. Although it may be historically proven it felt wrong to be rooting for a character with all these sexual issues... it was actually kind of disgusting.
As for its really good points, the cinematography was breathtaking and the story of Alexander trying to be a great leader with so many things dragging him down (His parents, his sexuality, the competitors for his throne, his health, his moral) was enough to keep me interested and watching. There were also great, genius lines of dialogue in this film that I felt were a bit lost in the full product of the script, but they really stood out in the film.
If they had gone lighter in a few things, and would have been more strong with the theme of Alexander's strong will and perseverance, I would have enjoyed this film a whole lot more.
