Review of Alexander (1996) by Nick T — 29 Jan 2011
A preposterous and protracted Oliver Stone biopic about the life of the conqueror Alexander the Great in 320BC. The historical figures were grandiloquent and cartoonish, and the hodge-podge of accents was confusing to say the least.
Connor Paolo was aggravatingly earnest as the young Alexander, and Colin Farrell was uninspiring and laughably feminine as the adult Alexander. Angelina Jolie and Val Kilmer seemed inauthentic and ill-fitting in the historical context.
Anthony Hopkins' character narrated with a sickly-sweet sentimentality. Jared Leto was creepy and awful.
