Review of Alex Cross (2012) by Kevin U — 14 Jan 2013
Tyler Perry, of Madea fame, plays author James Patterson?s detective in a new film directed by Rob Cohen (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor). If you think this sounds terrible, you are right. Casting Perry as Cross, played before by Morgan Freeman, is just one of many things wrong with the movie (Idris Elba would?ve been a better choice).
The plot consists of Cross investigating the murders by Matthew Fox?s sadistic killer called Picasso before he goes after a rich industrialist. Only Cross can understand Picasso?s motive by the charcoal drawings Picasso leaves behind.
The lazily constructed script has everything you have seen before in hundreds of cop shows. Cohen?s direction is careless when staging the action, especially the fight Cross has with Picasso. Their confrontation is shot with shaky cameras (again with the shaky cams).
Fox, however, is actually scary good in the role with the veins bulging out of his muscles. As a suspenseful detective drama, this is so average that is loses any of the suspense, character development and thrills from Patterson?s books.
