Review of Albert Nobbs (2011) by Cl O — 10 Jan 2012
Albert Nobbs - rating 6.4 Glenn Close plays a woman passing as a man in order to work and survive in 19th Century Ireland. Some 30 years after first donning men's clothing she finds herself in a prison of her own making.
She secretly saves her daily tips and dreams of buying a Tobacco shop with a home above the shop and a peaceful life as a married man. Albert Nobbs pursues the much younger Helen (Mia Wasikowska) as his potential wife, even though she rebuffs him and is in a relationship with a cruel younger man.
The story is touching but very slowly moving and Nobbs is so stoic that, with the exception of one scene where Albert is transparent and vulnerable, it is hard to get to know him. Close is great and will get an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress but the film ultimately disappoints.
