Review of Albert Nobbs (2011) by Rostek P — 05 Feb 2012
I wanted Glenn Close's passionate dream-role-project to be better. The only time I really cared about the movie was when Janet McTeer was on screen. She was lively, surprising, fresh, human, vital.
I don't think Close had the right approach to the role: yes, Albert Nobbs is a human being who lives within himself, but Close needed to invite me as a viewer to share her character's inner experience.
On the surface it was predictable, boring and dull. I needed to feel what it was to live like that, the dreams, the pain. And I didn't get much insight from Albert observing the shop. There were plenty of possibilities, but the cast and crew simply ignored them.
