Review of Albert Nobbs (2011) by Liliane S — 25 Feb 2012
Rodrigo García's Albert Nobbs is the story about the servant named Albert Nobbs (Glenn Close) who works at the classy hotel in Ireland in the late 19th century. His biggest dream in life is to own his own tobacco shop, but he also has a dark secret, he is really a woman, who have been forced to dress as a man in other to survive. He also befriend another of his kind, Hubert (Janet McTeer) who advises Albert to take a wife in order to realize his dream, and he has found one, a maid named Helen (Mia Wasikowska) who is already in a relationship with another of the houses employees, Joe (Aaron Johnson) whom she have told that Albert has feelings for, and Joe see this as an opportunity to get enough money to go to america.
Glenn Close and Janet McTeer does a great job of portraying two women who is forced to dress up as men. Athought I think McTeer is more convincing as a man and she's suppose to be the man in the story. Close does a great job of showing us a vulnerable man, with all his hopes and dreams. The story is also a sad one, because it's shows us the society where there's no space and right for women. Thumbs up.
