Close gives an impressive performance as a woman in 19th century Ireland who disguises herself as a man so that she is able to work as a butler in a Dublin hotel, but an unexpected encounter threatens her livelihood, in this carefully crafted yet emotionally distant and, at times, irritatingly implausible adaptation.
