Review of Alaska (1996) by Kelly C — 25 Nov 2008
With Dirk Benedict and Charlton Heston in this film, you would think that alone would seal the deal.
Add in a young Thora Birch and that kid from "Angel," whose acting skills were still developing and a polar bear that had better acting skills than both of them at the time and this is what you get - a constant swirling panoramic National Geographic documentary of Alaska, peppered in with a typical animal adventure plot of some stanky hunters trying to poach polar beers and a group of kids who could give a damn because they just want to save their pop who because they cannot rely on the Alaskan town's law enforcement to get things done. They just so happen to run across this polar bear and only decide to help it from the hunters because it will not stop following him. Way to have some compassion there people. It's only later that they find themselves for who they are. Polar bear wins!
It's amazing that none of these people really suffer from extreme cold conditions and frostbite, especially after getting wet several times. I know the Faceman has superpowers, but c'mon!
All of this and I actually kind of liked watching it for the horrible inconsistencies and casting reputation.
