Overall an OK movie. The musical numbers for the most part are good minus a few poor decisions for where to put them. Will Smith does great as a genie in his own right, and the actors for Aladdin and Jasmine were well chosen. I biggest gripe with the movie is Jafar. In the cartoon movie, Jafar is a vizier who is driven by not only his own selfish desire for power, but also by the infuriating awareness that he is under the command off an incompetent leader. I'm sure this at the very least was something that many could relate to, as Jafar was clearly capable of leading, and extremely effective in his ways, albeit they were evil. But in this new movie, the Sultan is not an incompetent buffoon, and Jafar is not an older magistrate who exudes an aura of danger, knowledge, and evil. The sultan is quite capable, and Jafar is more akin to a young statesman who desperately wishes to rise above his station. In the end this does not feel like Jafar because what he is stated to be, and what he is shown and written as do not match.

The movie is ok, but don't get your hopes up too much.
