Review of Aladdin (2019) by Captiosus — 24 May 2019
I went into this movie with very low expectations and I was still disappointed. I was expecting to hate Will Smith's Genie but, surprisingly, he was one of the few high points of the film. He made Genie his own and didn't just try to clone Robin Williams and the role was all the better for it.
Everything else, though.. just awful. Adding Jasmine's new, feminist pandering "I don't need no man, I'm a strong woman!", musical numbers ("Speechless" parts 1 and 2) not only felt out of place but also were cringe af.
Nothing felt menacing about Jafar -- he felt like a SyFy b-rated TV movie villain. The visual effects were pretty damn good, at least.
