Review of Aladdin (1992) by John P — 22 Aug 2014

Ah the good ol' days of Disney, where it wasn't considered offensive towards Muslims if your characters in the movie are set in the Middle East. Aladdin, an all-time Disney classic is number three on my list for best Robin Williams' movies that he ever starred in. Based on the Arab folktale of Aladdin and the magic lamp from One Thousand and One Nights, the film became an instant staple in the Disney franchise with over half a billion children watching it every year. Giving them inspiration into believing any wish, in which they can put their mind to, can truly come true. So what makes this an instant classic that stands out above all the rest? Well sit back and I will tell you why.

All of the music in here is done by Alan Menken and it is handled beautifully well. By that, I mean it won two Academy Awards for Best Music and Original Score with "A whole New World" and "Friend Like Me" which, if you ask me, Friend Like me is way better. The animation is spectacular as well with the design animation from these characters looking so great that, from what I heard, the animators designed each one based on a different geometrical shape which was quite a surprise to me. Every single voice actor in here were great as well especially, and I'm not showboating this, Robin Williams as happy go lucky blue Genie and Jonathan Freeman as Jafar who instantly became one of my Top Five favorite childhood villains. As for the negative parts in this film it's hard to say because there are some scenes which seem a little too hammy and cliché, but given that this is a children's movie I will let it slide this time. Overall, it is a cartoon classic which every little boy and girl can enjoy whether it would be the action, the light romance, or the goofball comedy. Which is why this film is easily a five star excellence.
