Review of Aladdin (1992) by Unknown C — 26 Sep 2014
The film does a really good job paralleling it's leading protagonist and antagonist. What binds them is the fact that both lie and put up a façade in order to try and move up in the world, as well as trying to depend on the use of magic in order to get what they want.
Jafar is a greedy and sadistic man who puts up the guise of being a stolid and loyal adviser. He also uses a magic staff with hypnotic powers to assert control over the Sultan, and plans on using the Genie within the cave of wonders in order to take absolute power.
Similarly Aladdin wants to move up in the world (not liking the fact that he is considered lowly and is belittled), and tries to do so with the power of the Genie. Taking on the persona of a prince with a new name and putting up a more confident/cocky façade in order to try and impress those around him.
He becomes so dependent on it, that he considers not giving the Genie his freedom as he promised in order to be sure he could have him around to help maintain the ruse. Interestingly enough Jasmine is actually the one who manages to see through both Aladdin and Jafar's guises as being artificial.
The ironic thing being that though he didn't know it and cut himself short, she actually started having feelings for him for himself and not what he thought he needed to be.
