Review of Aladdin (1992) by Mitchell B — 26 Feb 2017
Ugh. In the opening 10 minutes of Aladdin, two things became immediately obvious - 1. That Disney and animation in general has greatly evolved in the years since this earned its place in the public consciousness and 2. I couldn't stand watching any more than 10 minutes. What I hoped would be a discovery of everything that everyone has loved in this much beloved rendition of the Arabian Knights tale quickly turned into the realisation that I hate this era of Disney animation. The art is rubbery and cheap looking - I am reminded again how appreciative of computer animated features I am. The characters are grating across the board - not only do you have to bear the brunt of a completely unfettered Robin Williams, but you're treated to Gilbert Gottfried... as a parrot... where is a sharp instrument to gouge out my eardrums? And the Broadway style soundtrack? Terrible.
If given the choice of a Disney era to erase from history I might wipe out eve thing between The Black Cauldron and the Lion King. If you'd seen Aladdin and love it then I'm happy for you. But if like me you hadn't experienced it years ago, avoid letting it out of the lamp.
