Review of Akira (1988) by Stephen L — 24 Oct 2010
The opening scene with the bar and the motorcycle battle is absolutely amazing and since Blade Runner is my favorite film of all time, you can see why I love it. The art and detail that went into the beginning had me completely hooked.
Unfortunately it didn't last. I loved this movie until tetsuo ran into the elderly midget or whatever. the plot of this movie was way more than it needed to be and I can understand why some people like this, but I got really bored of it after awhile.
I just wanted to see some more cyberpunk, tech-noir, neo-gothic, post-apocalyptic, metropolitan visuals. if it had been just about the street gangs and their battle for turf, I would have loved it, but it was all about some weird psychological, energy, government bull that I didn't care about.
I know it's based on a manga, but the city was really the only thing that drew me into watching this movie. guess I'll have to stick with Blade Runner, Dark City and Metropolis.
