Review of Akira (1988) by Nader H — 01 Apr 2011
The fact that it looks better than most animated entertainment today alone is enough to warrant Akira as one of the signature examples of cinematic excellence.
But a good story and musical score also helps.
But honestly, it is somewhat overrated as the story despite being well told for the most part, does seems to rush and skip around at times. I've heard from disappointed fans of the manga that they jumped around in the movie, leaving out significant parts. It would explain why the second act seemed a little jarring.
Regardless, it's a good movie and on every anime fan's must see list.
