Review of Akira (1988) by Andreas O — 14 Jul 2011
Stylistic anime feature with great animation and a sometimes surprisingly complex character grid, Akira is often recognized as one of the genre's most influential works. The story is interesting and I enjoy the fact that not everything is explained in clear detail, leaving the viewer to interpret, without making the movie feel convoluted.
Most stylistic, however, is perhaps the music or - perhaps - the lack thereof, as the film combines a quite powerful score with long, haunting periods of silence. In most every aspect, Akira is a memorable experience and a movie that should well transcend the anime fanbase.
