Quite possibly one of the most influincial and important anime films of it's time. Akira opened up a whole new fanbase and genre to american film viewers with its wacky original plot and absolutely timeless and beautifuly crafted hand-drawn animation.
it's a must see for any animation or even action film lover. I HIGHLY RECOMEND it be watched on blu-ray in japanese with subtitles. but for a first time viewer watch it with the english voices first that way you can appreciate the visuals without reading the bottum the whole time.
