Review of Akira (1988) by Kyle T — 12 Jun 2012
It is one very important movie, Iâ(TM)ll say that right now, and came out during a very big point in time for Japanese history, where youth were very anti-government/army. This film brings up that subject in a very big way, and the animation style looks huge (though I am not a fan of Katsuhiro Otomoâ(TM)s facial animation style), and is a good feast for the eyes.
The story was adapted from a manga (Japanese graphic novel) the size of a phone book, so stuff almost certainly hast to get cut to meet film lines, especially with animation, but it still feels really empty.
A lot of the story was taken out, and a lot of things are left unexplained. Itâ(TM)s still a decent movie, donâ(TM)t get me wrong; but it is much more of an important film than it is a good movie. This film inspired a lot of what anime would be in the future, and changed its medium.
I respect it for that, and to be fair, the story is well done on its own, and the characters are certainly well developed, but I cannot deny its flaws as a whole. Good movie though, I would recommend it to those interested in anime history, but I will say it has its major flaws.
