Review of Akira (1988) by John A — 30 Mar 2013
The filmmakers seem to revel in the ultra-violence, undermining any coherence regarding the clearly tragic circumstances of post-apocalyptic Tokyo. The detailed backgrounds often draw the eye, while the characters have possess virtually no redeeming qualities and the story barely holds together.
A bit more focus on compelling characters and a lot less delight in the darker sides of the human experience would make this a worthwhile experience . . . and a different movie altogether.
