Review of Akira (1988) by Shane S — 02 Sep 2013
If "Summer Wars" is the absolute emotional high you can get while watching an animated film, then "Akira" is the complete opposite. Mind you: both of them are impressive, but "Akira" goes out of its way to crush your soul while giving you a more-than-sufficient allegory on how absolute power corrupts absolutely. Packed to the brim with eye-popping visuals, impressive animation, some of the most iconic imagery this side of film, and impressive voice-acting (from the 2001 dub, not the Hong Kong-market dub with Liquid Snake voicing Kaneda), Akira is a relentlessly unique and unflinching portrayal of mental dessication and how people can either overcome it or become as hungry as Tetsuo the Iron Man over here.
Speaking of Tetsuo the Iron Man OH MY GOD I NEED TO SEE THAT NOW.
