Review of Akira (1988) by Ryan H — 22 Jul 2014
This astonishingly well hand-animated film set the bar high for anime. The attention to detail was unprecedented in 1988, and the restored blu ray edition offers an incredible experience.
I first saw this film in the late 90's, before the English dub was updated from the inaccurate original 80's dub. It was the first anime I ever saw, as is the case for many in the west. It's influence has reached far beyond art house animation to huge sci fi blockbusters, like the Matrix.
It's only flaw is a somewhat convoluted plot that is difficult to grasp on first viewing. This is a common problem with anime that is adapted from manga that included multiple volumes, condensed into a 2-hour film.
It is a benchmark in animation and worth watching for anyone serious about important films of cinema history and animation.
