Review of Akira (1988) by Reza P — 02 Oct 2014
I watched this movie 2 years ago and completely forgot about it. Now, out of the blue, I just felt like watching it again and I was absolutely blown away this time. The sheer force and beauty of its animation and overall story is just astonishing.
This movie truly is a masterpiece that fuels the imagination. Amazing that someone could have thought of something so bizarre and gory, but yet, at the same time, so poetic. Now I'm reading the books and they are just remarkable.
Each panel doesn't make the art feel refined or constricted, it allows the art to roam freely throughout each page and lets the story take its course. The story itself is like something that pops out a teenage boys head but is afraid to let that story out because they can't figure out how to piece it together except Katsuhiro Otomo who wasn't afraid to let it out.
I'm not a huge anime fan, but I'll watch it if it peaks my interest, but this isn't just any ordinary anime you pull up on Netflix and watch on a rainy day, Akira is cool, it's mean, it's surreal, it's gory, it's beautiful, and it's down-right awesome.
Akira is art in motion.
