Review of Akira (1988) by Kyle S — 17 Nov 2014
I'm a bit confused. This being one of the first anime films I've seen, I'm not a huge fan. Or let's say, I'm not a huge fan of explosions during every scene. That's unfair, so I'll back up.
I liked the premise. In fact, I actually loved the premise! The whole movie had such a dark, murky atmosphere that had strong resemblance and inspiration towards other movies like Blade Runner and Mad Max.
But after a while, the whole thing dragged a lot. Characters simply shouting tersuo's name over and over doesn't exactly count as decent dialogue. Yes, there really isn't much for them to say but the writer could've spent more time developing these characters rather than having them repeat the same lines over and over.
I agree with myself that this rating was a little unfair. But putting all those flaws aside, I loved the animation, the style and the feel of the movie, with a great score. Being a gritty, dystopian science-fiction film, I was expecting to like it which I did at first but ending up dragging a lot the more it progressed.
This rating feels a bit unfair so I'll probably give it another watch. If I still don't like it, then it's just my opinion.
