Review of Akira (1988) by Tim R — 02 Apr 2015
An absolute benchmark in animation. The film that introduced North American audiences to anime. Outstanding visuals, terrific action with adult themes, and an amazing score. There had bee nothing much like it before and the sophistication of the imagery, matched with the frighteningly intense story-line, helps make this an epic and remarkable picture.
That said, it does at times teeter on imploding in on itself. One can tell it's adapted from a Manga series. Otomo seems to be trying to cram in too much. You might call it too smart for it's own good.
Still, it is essential viewing and a part of film history. A true original.
