Review of Akira (1988) by Miguel P — 03 Dec 2010
Akira is by far the best anime film I've seen and I only seen a few. If your into sci-fi film this one is for you. .
Akira's plot could be confusing sometimes and if your not paying attention you might miss some important details. Akira is based in the near future in Tokyo after World War 3. Kaneda is a young kid who's in a biker gang with several others. Tetsuo is as well another biker gang member and friend to Kaneda. One day while fighting a rival biker gang Tetsuo encounters a strange being that injures him. The military takes him and the being and starts to experiment with him. At the same time a resistance is trying to break in to a military installation to free the being. Kaneda joins them. They don't trust or agree with the way the govt. is handling it. .
Tetsuo escapes the facility and starts having graphic nightmares and develops weird powers. He goes out to the city but the real question is if it's really Tetsuo that escaped or something else.
The film's animation is great and if you compare it to now it will still beat most anime films. Vivid colors and great character designs and futuristic Neo Tokyo looks great. The voice acting in English was good too and every character had a great voice to match up with their personalities. Slick action and great suspense makes the film go by fast. The violence is strong and it might get to some people but there's good character development so we care about these people to not look away. .
If want a good start in anime this is a must see film. .
MP ***** 5/5.
