Review of Akira (1988) by Bill C — 29 Mar 2011
This was my first experience with full blown Anime. I'm on search to find another anime that is comparable. I've watched allot and they all come up lacking. The thing that sticks with me even from the first time I saw it is the visceral quality of the tight shot imagery that is brought home by the sounds and the sound track.
The motion linked with the sounds are so in engaging you feel worn out just watching it. I remember catching the Akira teaser on another Indie movie in 1988 about a year before it came out. I could tell by the trailer I would want to see it.
When the movie actually came out in limited release I was blown away. It was not easy to find I had to go down town to a small Landmark theater. The plot and characters are typical for most of my anime experiences.
They are schizophrenic in either being over subdued cool or maniac expressive. If your like me just ignore it and sit back and let your auditory and visual cortexes have some fun!
