I can't say I fully understood what was going on but from the bits I did follow, I liked what I saw. Fantastic animation, an intriguing and complex story (despite the coherency problems), imaginative and ultra-violent action sequences, and a generous helping of real innovation have helped make Akira a cult classic, and something of a measuring stick for future anime features.
