Review of Akira (1988) by Shiggity S — 20 Jul 2012
This movie is great... for all those people who like to pretend they can appreciate anime or fancy themselves movie critics. Anyone who actually watches anime knows there are many of them whose animation, plot, and dialogue far outshine Otomo's self-admitted failure of a 2182-page manga adaptation.
Although I admit I didn't see the 2001 English dubbed version, I did see the original 1989 English dubbed version and doubt they've reversioned it to any ameliorating extent and to do so would be to disingenuously alter the intention of the movie entirely.
The reason you didn't understand the ending? You didn't read the manga. Rife with Engrish (did you notice the "Red Alart?"), over-hyped drawings of Tetsuo and his incomprehensible transformation into a giant blob, Akira fails on almost every level, and the science fiction movies of today certainly are not in the debt of this ridiculous, inane waste of two hours.
