Review of Akira (1988) by Robert I — 17 Jan 2013
Fuck Disney, Screw Don Bleuth, There is only room at the top for one Animated Movie and THIS IS IT. Without this movie and a couple similar from the same studio (Ghost in the shell) There would be no Matrix, pure and simple.
Sci-Fi in general was in quite a slump toward the end of the 80's then this appears in Japan. It starts small and gains momentum and arguably cause the explosion of Anime onto the world market. It reminds writers and directors that sci-fi doesnt have to be dumb, that it can be clever and and awe inspiring, it showed that animation didn't have to have a child target audience.
There are very few films that can be pin pointed to show a great change within the film industry but this is one of them, no doubts, no arguments, no contest.
