Review of Akeelah and the Bee (2006) by Gin L — 10 Nov 2007
A gifted 11 year old 7th grader who goes to school in the ghetto has so much potential. But she cuts class. She originally hated being in a spelling bee, but suddenly decides to be in it. Almost every black stereotype was in this movie.
A dead father. A single mother. Oldest brother gone off into the military. Drug dealing teenage brother. Teenage sister with a newborn baby. And this was all in Akeelah's family. Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett once again play the same types characters that they usually play in a movie.
Laurence is the leader type who does not tolerate foolishness from anyone. And Angela Bassett is the mother who doesn't tolerate any foolishness. Akeelah lying about the spelling bee and mother finding out and not getting too upset plot was similar to a scene in Sister Act 2.
That idea was stolen. We should have known there would be a tie in the Spelling Bee.The Chinese boy couldn't lose. One thing that is true about this movie. The racism that is seen in this movie still exists in 2006.
