Review of Akeelah and the Bee (2006) by Nona H — 21 Jul 2008
Excellent movie. Good to see Angela and Lawrence together again. KeKe Palmer who stars as Akeelah is an outstanding actress. The story is cute and great inspirational material for kids of all ages. I was torn on the portrayal of Angela Bassetts character, Akeelahs mother.
The movie poses her as the barrier to Akeelah's dream of winning the spelling bee but at the same time wants the audience to empathize with her (somewhat like Sister Act). This didn't feel right to me.
Otherwise, it's a great family move and I think every elementary age child should see it!
