Review of Ajami (2009) by Dickie L — 14 Jul 2011
Ambitious, multi-stranded, multi-lingual Ajami depicts racial tensions in an even handed-way thanks to co-direction by an Israeli and a Palestinian. The dove-tailing of events and slow unravelling of details brings rewards late in the game, but its a long journey getting there.
It's pretty hard mustering sympathy for most of the characters, given the lack of compassion they have for each other. This is drama on a grand scale, clearly modeled on pics like Babel and City of God, yet lacks the originality and visual verve of those films.
The sub-titles were original though, changing from blue to yellow depending on whether Hebrew of Arabic was being spoken.
