The birth of the disaster movie as this film is dubbed, is a very slow birth and I pity the mother that had to squeeze all those hours. The disaster bit never gripped me, there was nothing too exciting about it, and it's hard to imagine that girls back then grabbed their boyfriends' bulging, yet trembling, biceps in terror as the faux plane hurtled through the faux night.
But acting and 'side plot' wise, this movie holds up well, interspersing the careening drama and action with hilarious moments that make it easy to see how Airplane! was born out of Airport.
