Review of Airplane! (1980) by Tanya K — 03 Jun 2011
Y'know, there's something about this incredibly ridiculous slapstick that just has you busting your gut with laughter. Maybe it's because I grew up with it, but whatever the case - it just works.
The one-liners are so left field that you never see them coming and make you wonder, 'What were the writers smoking - and pass it around.' No, seriously. Julie Hagerty nails mouse-like and ditzy Elaine, with Robert Hays' über-wounded Ted as her perfectly matched counterpoint.
Lighthearted though it may be, Airplane! pushes the envelope ('Joey, have you ever seen a grown man naked?'). Despite the farce though we really care about Ted and Elaine, and all the other wacky characters.
Comedies come and go, but they sure don't make 'em like this anymore.
