Review of Airplane! (1980) by Huw P — 01 Nov 2011
A cult classic and not hard to see why, Airplane shows how spoofs are meant to be done (it's successors, which shall not be named, could learn a lot through the watching of this film). Relying on an older brand of humour (sight gags, deadpan humour, etc.), Airplane relies on being witty and at the same time willing to dumb itself down at points, effortlessly swinging back and forth to catch viewers out with sudden, surprise laughs.
The brillant Leslie Nielsen is the highlight of this film, bringing solid comic acting to one of the great films that solidified his acting career. The gay airline operator gets a tad annoying but one must remember this was all part of the humour back in the day when everything was taken the micky out of.
