Review of Airplane! (1980) by Mike L — 13 Jul 2012
What I am about to say might sound like an insult but trust me, I mean it in the best possible way:
Airplane! is ridiculous.
It's astonishingly funny, over-the-top, and outrageous. In some ways it's like a Rube Goldberg machine of comedy, every little piece, every sight-gag and one-liner, is hilarious in its own right, but taken together it is a fabulous vehicle that accomplishes a simple goal: to make you laugh. And it does. Hard. If I had to describe the brand of humor I'd say it's something like a four-way cross between a Mort Drucker MAD Magazine drawing, a Mel Brooks film, Monty Python's most ridiculous sketches, and an SNL sketch. But that's only an approximation. It fills in pretty much every piece of the humor spectrum, there's something for everyone; subtle to outrageous, parody to pulled-from-nowhere-nonsense.
It's just fun. End of sentence. There's nothing more to it and there doesn't need to be.
Oh, and after you see it you'll have the unavoidable urge to quote it. It's okay, it's only natural....looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
