Though one cannot easily overlook it's more hammy elements, "Air Force One" nonetheless succeeds with fine performances and its rapid-fire plot as one thrilling blockbuster of the 1990s. I have to approach this movie differently as an U.

S. citizen; it's easy to feel untouchable when it comes to national security here. In that sense, "Air Force One" works by striking into the same vein of fear and vulnerability that the later September 11 attacks had on the United States, aiming its blow at the heart of our security.

Harrison Ford leads the ensemble as President James Marshall in yet another roll where he looks sad and must protect his family; he's joined by the delightful Gary Oldman as the slimy terrorist Ivan Korshunov, Glenn Close as Vice President Kathryn Bennett, and a commendable supporting cast including Wendy Crewson, Liesel Matthews, Dean Stockwell, Elya Baskin, William H.

Macy, and Xander Berkeley in the one unfortunately underdeveloped part. The special effects are functional, if sometimes lackluster, and the last-minute score by composer Jerry Goldsmith (with the help of composer Joel McNeely) is easily the strongest action music you'll ever hear written in 12 days.

So pardon the sappy cornball parts if you can and enjoy "Air Force One" for the strong action thriller it is.
