Review of Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013) by Brad S — 22 Aug 2013
Wow! From the opening frame to the closing frame, the world that writer/director David Lowery creates with his cast & crew in Ain't Them Bodies Saints is gorgeous and fascinating. Every rusty, dusty, dirty detail in the production design reinforces this presumably 1970's / early 1980's period piece and creates a fully lived-in feel that DP Bradford Young makes look fantastic with his low natural light cinematography.
The film starts a little slow and abstract, but builds with emotional character-driven momentum to a somewhat expected conclusion. Certain scenes with their Malickian natural soundscape and beautiful folksy musical score just captured me fully.
The film has strong creative editing and incredible performances from the entire cast, especially Affleck, Mara, Foster and Carradine. One of the best films of 2013 so far and will probably make my Top 10 Movies of the Year list in January.
I really hope this film finds its audience and is appreciated come awards season.
