Review of Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013) by Moya W — 04 Oct 2013
Ain't Them Bodies Saints wasn't as good as I'd hoped it would be. I don't know why. Maybe it was that the trailer made me believe that it was about something that it wasn't. Because I had quite a hard time understanding the movie when watching it.
It says that it's supposed to be set against the backdrop of 1970's Texas Hill Country, but some parts of the movie made it feel more like it was the 19th Century.
The imagery was absolutely beautiful and the acting was astonishing, from both Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck. They did a great accent and they made this movie believable even when you didn't really understand it. They - and the amazing directorial effort - are the reason to watch this movie. That is the reason why you'll be somewhat amazed by the end of it. It's just a shame that the main movie was a disappointment and that it was a struggle sitting through it, despite the acting skills and the pure beauty of it all.
