Review of Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013) by Dustin G — 08 Jan 2014
The stark poeticism of the visuals fit the story nicely, but also feel a little try hard. Like Lowery is trying to be Terrance Malick, whereas with Malick it doesn't feel like he's putting effort into being poetic, it's more natural feeling with him, even if it isn't.
That, couple with the somewhat pretentious title make the film less buyable. But the story, the performances, and the visuals all come together to create an involving, softly told story with an air of melancholy running through it.
