Review of Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry (2012) by Doug L — 24 Sep 2012
A well made documentary about a somewhat interesting subject. Is this the most profound documentary of our time? Not really...Ai Weiwei is the documentary equivalent of the 20th news article you read on the Occupy movement or the 15th Holocaust movie you saw. Yeah, I get it. China is a place that oppresses free expression. I think we knew that in 1990 and nothing has changed in the last 20 years. The same can be said for Ai Weiwei. Is he a great artist? Not really. He seems like an intelligent copycat who mimics what he's seen in the West and merely applies a Chinese subtext to his work.
I don't feel my money was wasted but I won't see this film again. Confirms what you already know and challenges nothing new.
