Review of Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry (2012) by Roman R — 05 Oct 2012
"Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" is one of those 'important film' that everybody, including myself, will tell you to go see after coming out of the theater. But cliches are cliches for a reason.
"Never Sorry" informs us of the struggles involved with free speech in a society that suppresses it, reminds us of the importance of doing so, admits to the length it takes for true societal change to happen, and asks us to be strong in doing so.
This isn't "Kony 2012". The film shows us an artist who isn't content with just informing people of problems, but rather one who knows actions speak louder than words. There are dangers involved with doing so and the film documents that.
It also takes a moment to show us the artist's 'moral faults' and that while we may not agree with some of his personal choices we can still be motivated to change the bigger picture of the world with him.
