Review of A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) by The Critic ( — 01 Dec 2012
Really, this is a reworking of 'Pinocchio', with an excellent Haley Joel Osment as "mecha" David, rejected by his adopted family and venturing to the bright lights of a big city where he meets Gigolo Joe (a charming Jude Law). Together, they search for the Blue Fairy, a figure that David believes will turn him into a real boy and will thus receive the love of his mother, an outstanding Frances O'Connor.
Perhaps too long for its own purpose and not as polished as one would expect from the likes of Steven Spielberg, but there's no denying that 'A.I.' is an engaging and visually stunning piece of fantasy, whose melancholic overtones penetrate deep enough to have you connecting with robots and humans alike.
