Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Colton D — 29 Apr 2008
In an unhurried 94 minutes, director Werner Herzog manages to encapsulate a doomed spiral of power lust and madness, underscored all the time by a quiet savagery. This German language masterpiece - shot under hostile natural conditions - is a fictitious account of Spanish conquistadors led by rebellious Lope de Aguirre traveling down a wild river in South America in search of the elusive city of gold, El Dorado.
The depiction of their descent into numbness and hallucination is remarkably surreal, especially the image of a ship tangled on the top branches of a tree and the final sequence of monkeys crowding their raft.
