Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Matt O — 02 Feb 2008
Incredible film, Klaus Kinski's performance as Aguirre is probably one of the finest performances in history. Whether it's his brooding insanity, clunky walk or big bulging eyes he constantly pulls you in.
The scene with the guy playing the panpipes is great, you just can't tell if he's enjoying it, indifferent or about to run him through with his sword. The direction is wonderful and the story has a consistent darkly humourous undercurrent to compliment the stillness and growing sense of mania.
