Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Adam Z — 25 Feb 2008
Werner Herzog is the greatest living filmmaker. There it is, I said it, no questions asked. Even while I have only seen two of his films (this and "Grizzly Man"), it's all the evidence I need.
Klaus Kinski's phenomenal lead performance as the demented Aguirre is the best of its kind since Peter O'Toole's portrayal of T.E. Lawrence. Furthermore, this is exactly my kind of film: rich scenery, three-dimensional male & female characters all around, a haunting musical score, unflinching battle sequences, and most of all.
.. impossible dreams. A masterpiece.
